The Gospel of Mark

What if the most important question ever asked was directed personally at you? In Mark chapter 8, Jesus turns to his closest followers and asks something that cuts through every layer of religious tradition, cultural assumption, and secondhand belief: 'Who do you say that I am?' This message takes us deep into that moment, set against the backdrop of Caesarea Philippi, a place saturated with pagan worship and spiritual darkness, where Jesus deliberately chose to press his disciples toward a defining declaration of faith. We explore how easy it is to carry borrowed answers to this question, relying on what our parents believed, what our church tradition taught, or what culture suggests. But there comes a moment in every person's journey where those secondhand answers are no longer enough. The message challenges us to examine the gap between the Jesus portrayed by popular culture and the Jesus revealed in scripture, walking us through distorted versions of Christ, including a prosperity-driven Jesus, a rules-obsessed Jesus, and a conflict-avoiding Jesus, none of which reflect the full biblical picture. Ultimately, we are reminded that Jesus did not come merely as a teacher or moral example, but as the Savior of sinners, the one who lived the life we could not live and died the death our sin demanded. This is not just theological information. It is an invitation to a personal reckoning with the most consequential question of our lives.
